Eric: Top 25 Persian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5: Do you speak Persian?
In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Persian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ‘Do you speak Persian?’ In Persian, this is
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟
The first word in the question is
Mehrnaz: شما
Eric: meaning something like ‘do you’ in English.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) شما
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Mehrnaz: شما

Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Mehrnaz: فارسی
Eric: meaning Persian.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) فارسی
Eric: Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: فارسی

Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.

Mehrnaz: یک کم
Eric: means ‘a little.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) یک کم
Eric: Now repeat
Mehrnaz: یک کم

Eric: And next
Mehrnaz: صحبت می کنم.
meaning something like ‘I speak.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) صحبت می کنم.
Eric:Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: صحبت می کنم.

Eric: Listen to the speaker say, ‘I speak a little.’, and then repeat.
Mehrnaz: یک کم صحبت می کنم.

Eric: To use a different phrase, replace ‘a little’ with ‘very well.’
Mehrnaz: خیلی خوب

Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘very well’

Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘a little’. Say ‘I speak very well.’

Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace ‘well’ with ‘broken’.

Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘broken’
Mehrnaz: دست و پا شکسته صحبت می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘well’. Say ‘I speak broken.’

Mehrnaz: دست و پا شکسته صحبت می کنم.
To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Mehrnaz: نه، من فارسی صحبت نمی کنم.
Eric: Which is like saying No, I don't speak Persian. in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Mehrnaz: (Slowly) نه، من فارسی صحبت نمی کنم.
Eric: And one more time at normal speed:
Mehrnaz: نه، من فارسی صحبت نمی کنم.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Iran and someone asks you if you speak Persian. You want to answer that you speak a little. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟ (five seconds) یک کم صحبت می کنم.
Eric: Now you want to answer that you speak very well. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟ (five seconds) خیلی خوب صحبت می کنم.
Eric: You want to answer that you speak well. Answer the speaker's question.
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟ (five seconds) خوب صحبت می کنم.
Eric: Now you want to answer that you speak broken. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟ (five seconds) دست و پا شکسته صحبت می کنم.
Eric: Now you want to ask someone if they speak Persian. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Mehrnaz: شما فارسی صحبت می کنین؟
{pause}
Eric: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
