Bita Amini: Dr. Andalibi's office. How may I help you?
Kaveh Saber: Hello. I'd like to schedule an appointment with the doctor.
Bita Amini: Do you have a file here?
Kaveh Saber: Yes, my file number's 1343.
Bita Amini: What seems to be the problem?
Kaveh Saber: Last week, I chipped my tooth when I was eating nuts. At first, I had no problem but it's been two days that it’s been hurting severely. I can't chew anything with that side of my jaw.
Bita Amini: Have your gums bled, as well?
Kaveh Saber: No, but they're swollen severely, and I have a bad taste in my mouth.
Bita Amini: Alright, it seems you've got an urgent case. I need to see when the doctor's first available window is... Are you able to come in tomorrow morning at 9?
Kaveh Saber: Yes, I am.
Bita Amini: So to speed up the process, please come in half an hour earlier to take your tooth X-ray.
Kaveh Saber: Thank you so much.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: I hope Kaveh can get everything sorted out quickly and easily. Tooth pain is not fun!
Mehrnaz: No, it isn’t!
John: How is healthcare paid for in Iran? Is there health insurance?
Mehrnaz: Yes, in fact there are two major types of health insurance.
John: What are they?
Mehrnaz: The first is offered by سازمان تامین اجتماعی , the "Social Security Organization."
John: Social? Is that one government run?
Mehrnaz: Yes, it is. It’s run by the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security. The other type of insurance is offered by private companies.
John: Do all doctors charge the same amount?
Mehrnaz: There are regulations governing the costs, but you might get charged differently by different doctors.
John: Do people in Iran often go to the dentists?
Mehrnaz: Actually, some people skip the dentist in the hope of keeping their medical bills low. I wouldn’t recommend that though!

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Mehrnaz: بفرمائید
John: meaning "How may I help you?"
John: In the beginner series, we learned that this phrase can also mean "Here you are."
Mehrnaz: It's the second person polite, or plural, subjunctive/imperative form of فرمودن‏ .
John: This means "to order" or "to command."
Mehrnaz: You can use it to say "Here you are."
John: It can also be used for "What can I do for you?" and "After you."
Mehrnaz: It’s a polite phrase that you can use in informal and formal settings too.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... بیمارستان پارس. بفرمایید.
John: ...which means "Pars Hospital. How may I help you?"
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Mehrnaz: وقت گرفتن
John: meaning "get an appointment."
John: This is a phrase.
Mehrnaz: The first word is وقت , meaning "time" or "appointment," and the second word is گرفتن .
John: This means "to get" or "to obtain."
Mehrnaz: When you ask for an appointment, you use دادن , which means "to give."
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... می خواستم یه (یک) وقت بگیرم.
John: ... which means "I'd like to get an appointment with the doctor."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about transitive and intransitive verbs. Persian verbs are either transitive or intransitive. As you may already know, transitive verbs require an object.
Mehrnaz: The accusative, or direct marker را comes after any definite direct object.
John: One difference between Persian and English in the use of verbs comes when talking about injuries.
Mehrnaz: Yes, in Persian injuries happen to us.
John: But in English, we cause the injury. We say that "we broke our ankle," for example.
Mehrnaz: In Persian, we would say that a part of our body broke instead.
John: Let’s hear a sentence example.
Mehrnaz: از درخت افتادم و دستم شکست
John: "I fell off a tree and broke my hand."
Mehrnaz: رو یخ (روی یخ) لیز خوردم و مچ پام (پایم) در رفت.
John: "I slipped on the ice and sprained my ankle." For some other verbs though, it’s different.
Mehrnaz: موقع آشپزی دستمو (دستم را) بریدم.
John: "I cut my hand while cooking."
Mehrnaz: حواسم نبود و موقع خم شدن سرم رو (سرم را) کوبیدم به لبه صندلی.
John: "I wasn’t careful and when I was bending over, I banged my head into the edge of the chair." Now, let’s hear some useful phrases that you may hear at the doctors.
Mehrnaz: مشکلتون چیه؟
John: "What’s wrong?"
Mehrnaz: م درد میکنه
John: "My…. hurts."
Mehrnaz: براتون (برایتان) مسکن می نویسم.
John: "I’ll prescribe you a painkiller." Let’s finish the lesson by looking at some adverbs of manners, used to describe how something is happening.
Mehrnaz: The preposition به (beh), literally meaning "to," when added to a noun makes an adverb.
John: Let’s list some.
Mehrnaz:به آهستگی/آهسته
John: "slowly." Can you also give us a sample sentence?
Mehrnaz: For example you can say به آهستگی از کنارم گذشت.
John: Which means "Slowly, he got past me."
Mehrnaz: Another adverb is به آسانی .
John: "easily"
Mehrnaz: به سختی
John: "hardly" or "barely," can you give us a sample sentence for this one too?
Mehrnaz:به سختی می‌شه (می‌شود) سنش رو (سنش را) حدس زد.
John: which means "You can hardly guess her (or his) age."

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Mehrnaz: خداحافظ (khodaahaafez)
