Introduction
Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Persian Season 1, Lesson 10 - Asking How Much Something Costs. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask how much something costs in Persian.
Body
Eric: Here's the informal way to ask 'How much is this?' in Persian.
Mehrnaz: [Normal] این چنده؟(in chandeh?)
Eric: First is a word meaning 'this'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] این [Slow] این (in)
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'how much'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] چند [Slow] چند(chand)
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'is'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] ه [Slow] ه(eh)
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'How much is this?'
Mehrnaz: [Slow] این چنده؟ [Normal] این چنده؟
Eric: Here's the formal way to ask, 'What is the price of this?'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] قیمت این چقدره؟ (gheymat-e in cheghadr-e?)
Eric: First is a word meaning 'price'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] قیمت [Slow] قیمت (gheymat)
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'this'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] این [Slow] این(in)
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'how much'
Mehrnaz: [Normal] چقدر [Slow] چقدر(Cheghadr)
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'is'

Eric: Next is the word meaning 'I'll take '

Eric: Last is the word meaning 'it'

Eric: Listen again to the response, 'OK, I'll take it.'

Eric: Here's a response meaning, 'No, thanks. It's too expensive.'

Eric: First is a word meaning 'no'

Eric: Next is the word meaning 'thanks'

Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Mehrnaz: When negotiating prices, we usually don't directly say that something is too expensive. Most Iranians just don't give up asking for a better price! In Iran, in most shops you can bargain and ask for a discount. I hope you can master your Persian to be able to do so!
