Eric: Top 25 Persian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 19: What's wrong? in Persian
(In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Persian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What's wrong? In Persian this is
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟
Eric: The first word in the question is
Mehrnaz: چی
Eric: meaning ‘what’ in English.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) چی
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Mehrnaz: چی
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Mehrnaz: شده؟
Eric: meaning something like ‘is wrong.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) شده؟
Eric: Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: شده؟
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟
{pause}
Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question What's wrong?
Mehrnaz: خستم.
Eric: "I'm tired.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Mehrnaz: (Slow) خستم.

Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Mehrnaz: خسته
Eric: means ‘tired.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) خسته
Eric: Now repeat
Mehrnaz: خسته
{Pause}
Eric: And next
Mehrnaz: ام .
meaning something like ‘I'm.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) ام .
Eric:Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: ام .
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say, I'm tired., and then repeat.
Mehrnaz: خستم.
{pause}
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace ‘tired’ with ‘mad.’
Mehrnaz: عصبانی
Eric: mad
Mehrnaz: (slow) عصبانی (regular) عصبانی
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘mad’
Mehrnaz: عصبانیم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘tired’. Say ‘I'm mad.’

Mehrnaz: عصبانیم.
Eric: To use a different phrase, replace ‘mad’ with ‘worried.’
Mehrnaz: نگران
Eric: worried
Mehrnaz: (slow) نگران (regular) نگران
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘worried’
Mehrnaz: نگرانم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘mad’. Say ‘I'm worried.’

Mehrnaz: نگرانم.
Eric: To make another phrase, replace ‘worried’ with ‘sleepy.’
Mehrnaz: خواب آلود
Eric: sleepy
Mehrnaz: (slow) خواب آلود (regular) خواب آلود
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘sleepy’
Mehrnaz: خواب آلودم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘worried’. Say ‘I'm sleepy.’

Mehrnaz: خواب آلودم.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Iran and someone asks you what's wrong. You want to answer ‘I'm tired.’ Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟ (five seconds) خستم.
Eric: Now you want to say I'm mad. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟ (five seconds) عصبانیم.
Eric: You want to say I'm worried. Answer the speaker's question.
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟ (five seconds) نگرانم.
Eric: Imagine you're sleepy. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی شده؟ (five seconds) خواب آلودم.
Eric: Now you want to ask someone what's wrong. Ask the question
