Eric: Top 25 Persian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 18: What are you doing? in Persian
(In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Persian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What are you doing? In Persian this is
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟
Eric: The first word in the question is
Mehrnaz: چی کار
Eric: meaning something like ‘what’ in English.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) چی کار
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Mehrnaz: چی کار
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Mehrnaz: دارین میکنین؟
Eric: meaning something like ‘are you doing.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) دارین میکنین؟
Eric: Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: دارین میکنین؟
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟
{pause}
Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question What are you doing?
Mehrnaz: دارم فکر می کنم.
Eric: "I'm thinking.’ Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Mehrnaz: (Slow) دارم فکر می کنم.

Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Mehrnaz: دارم
Eric: meaning something like ‘I'm.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) دارم
Eric: Now repeat
Mehrnaz: دارم
{Pause}
Eric: Next is
Mehrnaz: فکر می کنم.
Eric: meaning something like ‘thinking.’
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) فکر می کنم.
Eric: Now repeat.
Mehrnaz: فکر می کنم.
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say, ‘I'm thinking.’, and then repeat.
Mehrnaz: دارم فکر می کنم.
{pause}
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace ‘thinking’ with ‘cooking.’
Mehrnaz: آشپزی می کنم
Eric: cooking
Mehrnaz: (slow) آشپزی می کنم (regular) آشپزی می کنم
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘cooking’
Mehrnaz: دارم آشپزی می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘thinking’. Say ‘I'm cooking.’

Mehrnaz: دارم آشپزی می کنم.
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace ‘cooking’ with ‘watching TV.’
Mehrnaz: تلویزیون تماشا می کنم.
Eric: watching TV
Mehrnaz: (slow) تلویزیون تماشا می کنم. (regular) تلویزیون تماشا می کنم.
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘watching TV’
Mehrnaz: دارم تلویزیون تماشا می کنم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘cooking’. Say ‘I'm watching TV.’

Mehrnaz: دارم تلویزیون تماشا می کنم.
Eric: To use a different phrase, replace ‘watching TV’ with ‘reading a book.’
Mehrnaz: کتاب می خونم
Eric: reading a book
Mehrnaz: (slow) کتاب می خونم (regular) کتاب می خونم
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with ‘reading a book’
Mehrnaz: دارم کتاب می خونم.
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace ‘watching TV’. Say ‘I'm reading a book.’

Mehrnaz: دارم کتاب می خونم.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Iran and someone asks you what you're doing. You are thinking. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟ (five seconds) دارم فکر می کنم.
Eric: Now imagine you are cooking. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟ (five seconds) دارم آشپزی می کنم.
Eric: Imagine you are watching TV. Answer the speaker's question.
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟ (five seconds) دارم تلویزیون تماشا می کنم..
Eric: Imagine you're reading a book. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟ (five seconds) دارم کتاب می خونم.
Eric: You want to ask someone what they are is doing. Ask the question

Mehrnaz: چی کار دارین میکنین؟
