In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Persian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Do you have any brothers or sisters? In Persian this is
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟
The first word in the question is
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر
Eric: meaning something like ‘any brothers and sisters’ in English.
Mehrnaz: (Slow, by syllable) خواهر برادر
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر

Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is

Eric: To use a different phrase, replace ‘sister’ with ‘two brothers.’

To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Mehrnaz: نه، من تک بچه ام.
Eric: Which is like saying ‘No, I'm an only child.’ in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Mehrnaz: (Slowly) نه، من تک بچه ام.
Eric: And one more time at normal speed:
Mehrnaz: نه، من تک بچه ام.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Iran and someone asks you if you have any brothers or sisters. You want to say you have a sister. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟ (five seconds) یه خواهر دارم.
Eric: Now imagine you have two brothers Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟ (five seconds) دو تا برادر دارم.
Eric: Imagine you have one brother and one sister. . Answer the speaker's question.
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟ (five seconds) یه برادر و یه خواهر دارم.
Eric: Imagine you have two sisters and one brother. Respond to the question.
Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟ (five seconds) دو تا خواهر و یه برادر دارم.
Eric: You want to ask someone is they have any brothers or sisters. Ask the question

Mehrnaz: خواهر برادر دارین؟
