INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to PersianPod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 6 - Making Weekend Plans in Iran. John Here.
Mehrnaz: سلام (salaam) I'm Mehrnaz.
John: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the future tense. The conversation takes place at home.
Mehrnaz: It's between Parisa and Milad.
John: The speakers are family members, therefore, they will speak Persian informally. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
John: Listen to the conversation with the English translation:
Parisa: Do you have any plans for this weekend?
Milad: It depends on how the weather is (turns out).
Parisa: What's the difference?
Milad: Because I was thinking we'd better go picnicking. But when I saw the weather forecast, I changed my mind.
Parisa: Is it going to be rainy?
Milad: Not just rainy. It's going to be sunny and cool in the morning and from noon onwards become cloudy. Heavy rain and thunder and lightning are likely in the afternoon.
Parisa: Well, we can take umbrellas and a tent with us.
Milad: But the weather forecast said it might rain so hard that it's likely the rivers will flood. There's a river flowing through the forest park. There's also a risk of fire because of the thunderbolts.
Parisa: Well, how about going early in the morning and coming back before the rain starts?
Milad: But it's been rainy all week and the ground will be wet and muddy. Plus, I guess we've got to wear a whole lot of clothes because of the cold.
Parisa: So what shall we do?
Milad: In my opinion, there's nothing better than this: that we stay at home and watch soccer!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
John: It’s a shame that the weather is bad so they can’t go for a picnic.
Mehrnaz: Yes, I hope it clears up soon so they can go.
John: Is picnicking popular in Iran?
Mehrnaz: Yes it is, as people in Iran love spending time in nature.
John: It can be very relaxing.
Mehrnaz: People in Teheran especially love it.
John: Where do people go?
Mehrnaz: People go to parks in the city, or even to the north of Iran by the Caspian sea.
John: Are there any other places?
Mehrnaz: A cheaper option is along the famous Road 59 also known as جاده چالوس, (jaaddeh chaaloos).
John: That is famous, I think I’ve heard of that.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is...
Mehrnaz: نظر خود را عوض کردن
John: meaning "to change one's mind."
John: This is a phrase.
Mehrnaz: The first word is نظر, which means "opinion." The second word is خود, meaning "oneself." Next is را.
John: This is an object identifier in Persian. The final part means "to change."
Mehrnaz: Yes, that’s عوض کردن.
John: How do we change this active sentence to a passive one?
Mehrnaz: First, کردن, changes to شدن,. Then we drop the the object identifier raa. Instead of خود, we add the possessive pronoun to nouns.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... نظرمون (مان) عوض شد.
John: ...which means "We changed our mind."
John: Okay, what's the next phrase?
Mehrnaz: هیچ چیز بهتر از این نیست
John: meaning "there's nothing better this."
John: This is also a phrase.
Mehrnaz: First is هیچ, which means "no." Next is چیز.
John: This means "thing." Following that is the word for "better."
Mehrnaz: بهتر. Then از, meaning "than," and این, meaning "this." The last word is نیست
John: meaning "is not" or "there’s not." Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Mehrnaz: Sure. For example, you can say... هیچ چیز بهتر از این نیست که سالن نمایش پراز تماشاچی باشه (باشد).
John: ... which means "There's nothing better than a theater that is full of spectators."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about the future tense. We’ll start by looking at how to express "going to be."
Mehrnaz: One expression we can use to talk about the future is قراره .
John: This is a colloquial expression that means "it’s supposed to."
Mehrnaz: The formal version is قرار است.
John: You can use this for things like the weather, as you never know for sure what it will be like.
Mehrnaz: You can also use قراره for "plans."
John: This time, it would translate to "going to" instead. For example...
Mehrnaz: قراره با مریم بریم (برویم) سینما.
John: "Maryam and I are going to go to the movies."
Mehrnaz: قرار نیست که ازدواج کنن (کنند).
John: "They’re not going to get married." Okay, one last example.
Mehrnaz: قرار شد که با خانواده آقای احمدی یه (یک) ویلا اجاره کنیم (بکنیم).
John: "We are going to rent a vacation house with Mr. Ahmadi’s family." Next, let’s look at some adverbs.
Mehrnaz: We’re going to concentrate on adverbs for likelihood, احتمال, or possibility, امکان.
John: How do we say "probably?"
Mehrnaz:احتمالاً. For example. احتمالاً فردا برمی‌گرده (برمی‌گردد).
John: "She/he’s probably coming back tomorrow." Next, "it’s likely."
Mehrnaz: احتمال داره (دارد). For example, احتمال داره (دارد) هفته دیگه (دیگر) برگرده (برگردد).
John: "It’s likely she/he will come back next week." And how about "it’s possible?"
Mehrnaz: امکان داره (دارد). For example, امکان داره بیان (امکان دارد بیایند).
John: "It’s possible they may come." The last one we’ll hear is "possibly."
Mehrnaz: ممکنه (ممکن است) For example, ممکنه (ممکن است) با هم بیان ( بیایند).
John: "They may possibly come together."

Outro

John: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
