Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Mehrnaz: Like in English, in Persian, you can ask how your friend is by asking salam, khoobi? cheh khabar? سلام، خوبی؟ چه خبر؟ . This means "Hey, you Ok?" or "what's up?" And in response, you can say salam, khabar-e khas-si nist سلام، خبر خاصی نیست. Meaning "Hey, nothing special!" Or you might hear someone say salaamati, khabar-e khas-si nist سلامتی، خبر خاصی نیست which literally means “health, nothing special”. Salaamati means “health”. So the speaker means they are fine and healthy!
